The Rockwall Ford team is dedicated to helping our neighbors in Rockwall, Mesquite, and Garland stay on top of all of their car’s maintenance needs. That’s why we’ve compiled the following tips to help you determine if it’s time to get your oil changed.
Has it been a while since you’ve had this valuable bit of automotive service performed? Are you unable to recall the last time it was done? Take a look at these signs you need an oil change to see if it’s about that time. If you have any questions along the way, we’ll be happy to answer them for you.
What Does Your Odometer Say?
One key sign that you might be due for an oil change is what you see when you glance down at your odometer. The suggested mileage between oil changes varies according to the type of oil you use in your engine. Be sure to consult your driver’s manual for the recommended type of oil to be used in your car.
If your car is newer, it probably takes synthetic oil. Synthetic oil can travel to between 6,000 and 7,500 miles before needing to be changed. For older cars that use conventional oil, the recommended mileage count for an oil change is anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000.
Remember that the way you drive, the climate, and road conditions play a big part in determining whether or not your oil makes it all the way through the recommended mileage interval before it needs to be changed.
Dashboard Warning Lights
Your dashboard lights are also good indicators that your oil is due to be changed. If your car is equipped with lights on your dash that let you know when your oil level or oil pressure is getting low, be sure to swing by a certified mechanic when you notice either one of those has lit up.
You should definitely do the same if the check engine light turns on. While this could also be telling you that an issue unrelated to the oil could be brewing, it’s always a good idea to have it checked out to prevent serious damage.
Unusual Engine Sounds
If your oil is getting too low or too thin, you might start to hear strange noises coming from the neighborhood of your engine block. Some of these sounds could include rumbling, ticking, or knocking. This could also be the case if your engine appears to be louder than normal.
The Color of the Oil Itself
In the event you’re unsure how long it’s been since you last had your oil changed, you can always take a look at the oil to check its condition yourself. If everything’s fine, your oil’s color can range between shades of honey and amber. If it’s any darker than that, you should have it examined by a technician. It should also be looked at if you notice any dirt in it.
