History of Ford and Chevy

Ford

Who hasn’t heard of Ford? Ford got its start in 1903 as the Ford Motor Company. By 1904, they opened an international plant in Canada. In 1908, Ford came out with the Model T, arguably one of their most famous vehicles. In 1917, Ford produced its first truck.

Ford values safety and in 1954, began crash-testing their vehicles to see how they’re affected when the unexpected happens. Ford continues to grow by improving their designs and producing more powerful trucks and faster sedans.

Chevy

Chevrolet is a bit younger than Ford, having completed their first engine in 1911 in Michigan. Their early vehicle designs focused a lot on style.

In 1918, Chevy put out its first truck, which was a success. In the 1930s, Chevy began producing sport sedans, with a built-in trunk. Chevy continued to build on their sport sedans and in the 1960s, the Camaro boomed in popularity.

Chevy continues to grow their innovation, like Ford, creating hybrids and improving their models’ fuel efficiency. Similar to Ford, they have become one of the most popular car brands in America.

Cars

As you see in the chart, this is the only category where Chevy out-manufactures Ford—by one model. Chevy offers the Spark, a sensible hatchback, and the popular Malibu sedan. Focusing on the Malibu, this model has two available engines, a 160 horsepower 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder and a 250 horsepower 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder version.

The Ford Mustang, Ford’s only car, has four available engines. They range from the 2.3L EcoBoost® I4 engine on the standard trim, with 310 horsepower, to the 5.2L supercharged cross-plane crank V8 available in the Shelby GT500, with an impressive 760 horsepower. If you’re looking for pure power and speed, then the Ford may be the way to go.

SUVs

When it comes to buying an SUV, you’re probably looking for a spacious interior. Let’s take two of the most popular SUV models from Chevy and Ford. The Chevy Equinox offers 40 inches of front headroom and 38.5 inches of headroom in the rear. Pair that with 40.9 inches of front legroom and 39.9 inches of rear legroom and you can really stretch out.

On the other hand, the popular Ford Expedition has 42 inches of front headroom and 40 inches of second-row headroom. Stretch your legs out, with 43.9 inches of maximum front legroom and 42.6 inches of maximum second-row legroom. If you’re looking for the right vehicle for a growing family, then a spacious Ford may be for you.

Trucks

Maybe you like to have a lot of adventures off the beaten path, with your favorite outdoor toys. Then, you’ll need a truck with plenty of towing power. The Chevy’s flagship Silverado offers an impressive 9,200 pounds of towing capability when properly equipped—unless you choose the diesel engine, in which case you’ll only have 9,000 pounds of capability.

If you look at Ford’s side of the equation, then obviously we’re talking about the Ford F-150. This powerhouse of a pickup has a maximum towing capacity when properly equipped of 14,000 pounds. If you’re looking for something to bring along your jet skis, your boat, or your canoe to the lake, then you’ll likely be better off going with a Ford.
