2022 Ford Explorer Safety Ratings
The Ford Explorer is a tough, family friendly SUV. It offers seating for seven and lots of cargo room. Can it protect your most precious cargo, though? Rockwall Ford finds out.
To show drivers in Rockwall, Mesquite, and Garland, TX, how it earned a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), we took a closer look at the Ford Explorer safety ratings.
Ford Explorer Safety Features
If you’re ever in an accident, you can count on the Ford Explorer to protect you. It features eight airbags, including a pair of front airbags, front-seat side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, and a Safety Canopy® System. This system works with a rollover sensor and includes side-curtain airbags covering all three rows of outboard seats.
You can feel confident that everyone is strapped in correctly, too. Seat belt pretensioners come standard along with Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH). There’s also a Belt-Minder® that lets you know if your seatbelt is unbuckled. You can even upgrade this feature to include reminders for all three rows.
Driver-Assistive Features
The Explorer also offers peace of mind with lots of driver-assistive features. Ford Co-Pilot360™ comes standard to help prevent accidents. It includes a Rear View Camera that can give you a better look at what’s behind you when you’re backing up. Some of the other features that come standard include:
- Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking
- Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross-Traffic Alert
- Lane-Keeping System
- Auto High-Beam Headlamps
For even more technology, Ford Co-Pilot360™ Assist+ is also available. It includes Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control and Evasive Steering Assist.
To keep your eyes on the road, the Ford Explorer features an available voice-activated navigation system, so you can get directions without taking your eyes off the road.
If you want more visibility during your drive, you can also add an available 360-Degree Camera system. It uses a series of cameras to create a bird’s-eye view of your SUV. It can help you navigate tight spaces and size up a parking spot. Once you’ve found a spot that’s big enough, available Active Park Assist 2.0 can take the wheel and steer your SUV into place.
Traction & Stability
To help you enjoy a safe and stable drive, the Ford Explorer runs on a reliable drivetrain that’s ready for all sorts of driving conditions. Rear-wheel drive comes standard, but Intelligent 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) is also available if you drive on rough terrain or slippery roads often.
You’ll also be able to adjust the drivetrain with the available Terrain Management System™. It includes seven selectable driving modes, such as:
- Slippery
- Trail
- Tow/haul
- Eco
- Normal
The Explorer also includes Hill Descent Control™ so you can travel down steep roads and trails at a safe, consistent speed. It also comes with standard AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control™ and Curve Control to manage tight turns and winding roads.
